Only 30 kilometres from the capital. in the hinterland of Almeria province lies the amazing lunar landscape of the Tabernas Desert. It is the only desert in Europe, extending over nearly two thousand square kilometres bounded by the Filabres, Alhamilla and Alpujarra mountains. Its imposing grandeur has been the backdrop to many “spaghetti western” movies.
Such a singular landscape is home to plant and animal communities that are specifically adapted and integrated there. These ecosystems are the reason that, in 1989, the Tabernas desert was declared a Special Protection Area for birdlife, and a proposed Site of (European) Community Interest. Several plants are endemic to this area, including some that are classified as rare worldwide.
Scarce rainfall and wide temperature variations (from -5 to 48ºC), together with very soft bedrocks give rise to erosion landforms that sculpt the spectacular “badlands” landscape, including steep slopes, “chimneys”, craters and dry gullies.
